Chapter 16
Toi
I hadn’t considered what would happen in the event that Lisa found out about our affair; hell, I hadn’t had time. The two of us had just started dating. Wasn’t it a little early for shit to be hitting the fan? However, from her phone call and the grim look on Carlton’s face when he came by to visit me the next morning, it was obvious that it had.
“She knows about us,” he said, stepping through the doorway.
“I know,” I said calmly. “She called me.”
“When?”
“Last night,” I advised him. “From your phone.”
“What did she say?”
“The basics, keep away from her husband,” I said. “How did she find out?” I questioned.
“Yesterday, when we were in the break room she called,” he explained. “I thought I was sending her to voice mail but I accidentally answered instead.”
“She heard us talking?” I concluded.
He shook his head, “Worst,” he said. “She heard us while we were—”
“Oh,” I said, cutting him off. “Wow…So what happened when you got home?” I listened quietly as Carlton gave me a breakdown of his conversation with Lisa and the ultimatum she gave him. Once he finished he looked at me with a solemn expression on his face. I came to my own conclusion of what his look meant.
“So you came to tell me it’s over,” I said. I kept my tone light and pleasant. I was disappointed, but I didn’t want to make him any more uncomfortable than I imagined he already was. I wanted him to know that I would get over my disappointment and we would still be cool. I knew he had to do what he had to for his son. I may have been disrespecting his marriage and helping him disrespect his vows, but there was something to be said about a father’s love.
“What?” He frowned. “No. Why? Do you want it to be over?”
“No, I just assumed…”
“You assumed wrong,” he said soothingly. “You can’t get rid of me that fast. I just wanted to let you know that the calls and time may be a little short until things cool down.”
“Oh,” I said, smiling. “That’s not an issue…I mean, I understand.” Certainly the man
couldn’t get right back to his old ways so soon. I understood that.
He smiled for the first time, then stepped closer. “Thank you for understanding,” he said, stroking my cheek with his fingertips. “I’ll call you on my lunch break.”
“Okay,” I said, giving him a quick hug.
“Bye baby,” he said, before walking out the door.

By noon it was as if someone had opened the shoppers’ floodgates. The store was packed and we were getting slammed with back-to-back transactions. I wasn’t complaining; the more money the store made, the bigger my bonus. My employees were handling the rush like troopers and I couldn’t be more proud of them. Chloe keyed the sales transactions, while Kathy, one of my part-time associates, bagged customers’ merchandise. I walked along the sales floor assisting customers, answering questions, and looking out for potential shoplifters.
